- We wanted to avoid designing any delivery (or “fedex”) quests at all. In fact, we put a sign on the door to the quest design area that said: “Every time you make a fedex quest, Abaddon will feast on puppy eyes.”

"Who’s Your Quest-Giver? Another major change we instituted for Guild Wars: Eye of the North was to tie nearly every quest outside the main narrative to one of the groups in the northlands. When you complete these optional quests, not only will you gain experience, items, skills, and gold, you will also build up your reputation with that group. While not necessary to progressing through the main storyline of the game, you will reap benefits from expanding your goodwill with groups like the Dwarves, Norn, and Asura. Each race possesses special skills they guard closely, only divulging to those whom they can trust. Increase your reputation and your effectiveness in these skills increases as well."

BAH more grinding for skills -.-"

If Dwarven boxing is more your style, you can hang around with Kilroy Stonekin, who’s come to the Far Shiverpeaks to settle his old debts. Jabs, punches, and uppercuts used in a flurry of combos will rule the day as you and Kilroy fight your way through the pugilistic circuit, collecting debts and taking names along the way. But the hand-to-hand combat doesn’t stop there. Imagine what it would be like going up against a Destroyer using nothing but your brass knuckles . . .

Hand-to-hand Combat? Dwarven Boxing with Kilroy Stonekin? Sign me up!

I think if a mesmer gets in a fist fight with a warrior and wins the warrior should lose a level.

It all sounds very good, but what ANet is doing in the current games doesn't match well with their promises for GW:EN. Here's the salient quote:

The maxim we took into this design cycle was: "play how you want, when you want, with who you want."

Ah.

And how does that philosophy mesh with the designers saying we can't have full hero parties because they want us to play with other people? Heck, I like PuGs and guild groups, but they aren't always available, and I (plus many others, according to polls and threads) would like to OPTION of taking a full hero party, even if it means that some of the heroes are on "automatic pilot" like henchmen.

That's how *we* want to play.

And ANet would rather say "No, play the game this way."

So please understand if I'm very skeptical of ANet's promises to let me play the game the way I (and many others) like.

GW:EN *sounds* good. But ANet's actions don't match their words.

Having a minimum or maximum on heros is irrelevant really, you yourself stated "even if it means that some of the heroes are on "automatic pilot" like henchmen.".

Something for everyone....hmmmm.

Complainers will still complain about grind for pve-only skills.

Sounds exciting to me though.

Wow, that really sounds great. Looks like they've been listening to our complaints about crappy quest rewards and are going to make it worth it to do these quests. I try to do them all anyways and through 3 campaigns (I probably should have 3 titles now ftw!) I've only got the Titan quests left. Takes forever but I enjoy the world. Was particularly happy to learn there will be an end to the Fedex quests.

I see a lot of people crying 'grind', but until the actual game is released, there's no way to know whether the quests will actually be grinding or not. Telling a player to go out and gather a hundred quest items from killing the same type of enemy over and over is a grind. Telling a player to go do a series of quests is no necessarily a grind unless those quests are monotonous and repititious. Killing enemies and fulfilling quests is after all what RPGs are all about. If playing the game is a grind simply by virtue of what it is has become a grind for you, then perhaps it's time to look to another genre of games to renew your enjoyment. The promise for no fed-ex quests is promising, but until we actually see the game, it's simply too early to tell what it will be like.

Most of the article sounds really, really awesome. I was just exploring Sorrow's Furnace yesterday, when I thought, "I really hope the new dungeons are like this!!" The mini games are basically going to be where some players spend hours and hours, hopefully they won't get too much of an advantage...and also, being AFK probably wont help anyway. Overall I'm super excited, it really sounds awesome.
